Fasting and Hair Loss: What You Need to Know

Hair loss during fasting is an important issue that deserves more attention. Intermittent fasting can affect hair health, as some research suggests. Hair loss during fasting is inevitable, much like how targeted weight loss isn't possible for specific areas of the body. It's challenging to predict the outcomes of fasting since factors such as the duration of fasts, proper nutrition, and genetics all influence the degree of hair loss. Let's explore research and preventive measures.

The Study

Researchers at Westlake University in Zhejiang, China, conducted a fascinating study on this very topic. They shaved the hair off a group of mice and subjected them to different fasting schedules. One group fasted every other day, another followed an 8-hour eating window with a 16-hour fast, and a control group had unrestricted access to food.

The results? The control group had mostly regrown their hair after 30 days, while the fasting groups showed significantly slower hair regrowth. By 96 days, the fasting groups still hadn't fully regrown their hair. The researchers found that fasting led to an increase in free fatty acids around hair follicles, causing oxidative stress and apoptosis (programmed cell death) in hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs), resulting in slower hair regrowth (Zhang et al., 2023).

The Human Connection

The study didn't stop at mice. A small clinical trial with 49 healthy adults found that an 18-hour daily fasting regimen reduced hair growth by 18% compared to a control group. This suggests that the findings might apply to humans as well.

Preventive Measures

Now, before you panic and give up fasting altogether, here are some tips to help you keep your hair healthy while you fast:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and herbal teas to keep your scalp and hair follicles well-hydrated.

  2. Nutrient-Rich Diet: Eat a diet rich in protein, iron, zinc, vitamins (especially B-complex vitamins, vitamin A, C, and E), and minerals. Foods like eggs, beans, lean meats, leafy greens, and fortified cereals can promote healthy hair growth.

  3. Manage Stress: Practice relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing, or aromatherapy to reduce stress, which can contribute to hair loss.

  4. Avoid Extreme Fasting: Avoid prolonged fasting periods and extreme caloric restriction, as these can lead to nutrient deficiencies and hormonal imbalances.

  5. Consult a Doctor: If you experience significant hair loss, consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and potential supplementation.

Conclusion

While fasting has its benefits, it's essential to be mindful of potential side effects like hair loss. By staying hydrated, eating a nutrient-rich diet, managing stress, and avoiding extreme fasting, you can support your hair health during your fasting journey. Additionally, it's important to remember that what you see on social media might not reflect reality. Many people use hair extensions or wigs in their before-and-after pictures, making their hair look bright, vibrant, and thick. Be kind to yourself during your journey, and remember that your health and well-being are what truly matter.
